A partir de la mediana edad el tiempo promedio que una persona duerme cada noche disminuye 30 minutos cada 10 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La respuesta a la pregunta de por qu\u00e9 nos despertamos cada vez m\u00e1s temprano a medida que envejecemos es casi una reacci\u00f3n fisiol\u00f3gica. A medida que nos hacemos mayores, necesitamos dormir cada vez menos. Un beb\u00e9 empieza a dormir aproximadamente 18 horas al d\u00eda, lo que significa que duerme casi todo el d\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Las ni\u00f1as y los ni\u00f1os duermen unas nueve horas por la noche y hacen algunas siestas, una por la ma\u00f1ana y otra por la tarde. Estas siestas tambi\u00e9n se pierden, primero por la ma\u00f1ana y luego por la tarde. Y m\u00e1s tarde, la necesidad de sue\u00f1o de los adultos es de unas ocho horas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cuando cumplimos a\u00f1os perdemos horas de sue\u00f1o<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cuando nos hacemos mayores dormimos menos horas, pero tambi\u00e9n nuestro sue\u00f1o es m\u00e1s superficial. El sue\u00f1o superficial, que llamamos N1 y N2, es el que se produce cuando empieza el sue\u00f1o: en \u00e9l pasamos de la vigilia al sue\u00f1o. Luego viene el sue\u00f1o profundo, N3, y \u00e9ste es el verdadero sue\u00f1o reparador, en el que descansamos y nuestro cerebro se cura a s\u00ed mismo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Estos dos periodos de sue\u00f1o no REM (movimientos oculares r\u00e1pidos) superficial y profundo se producen porque no se producen movimientos oculares r\u00e1pidos. Luego est\u00e1 la fase REM, en la que so\u00f1amos. A medida que envejecemos, dormimos m\u00e1s en sue\u00f1o superficial y menos en sue\u00f1o profundo, y nos despertamos m\u00e1s. Y aunque dormimos el mismo n\u00famero de horas al final del d\u00eda, dormimos menos horas por la noche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reducci\u00f3n de las actividades diarias<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Con la edad se pasa de un tipo de vida sobreestimulada por el trabajo y las relaciones sociales, a, por ejemplo, cuando nos jubilamos, en la que respetamos mucho m\u00e1s las horas de descanso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otro factor importante es que a medida que envejecemos, reducimos nuestras actividades diarias, lo que reduce la necesidad de descanso nocturno. Esto, por supuesto, si la persona mayor no presenta ninguna patolog\u00eda. Pero, adem\u00e1s, con el avance de la edad llega el aumento de las patolog\u00edas relacionadas con el sue\u00f1o. Los dos m\u00e1s comunes son el insomnio y la apnea obstructiva del sue\u00f1o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El insomnio ocurre cuando una persona no puede conciliar el sue\u00f1o, se despierta a menudo o demasiado temprano, pero no como una reacci\u00f3n fisiol\u00f3gica normal a la edad, sino como algo patol\u00f3gico. Si las horas que esta persona duerme no son suficientes para descansar, hay que investigar si hay alg\u00fan problema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La segunda causa m\u00e1s com\u00fan es la apnea del sue\u00f1o, que es la interrupci\u00f3n de la respiraci\u00f3n que se produce durante la noche. A medida que envejecemos, tomamos m\u00e1s descansos para respirar durante la noche y estos descansos interrumpen el sue\u00f1o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La combinaci\u00f3n de una buena alimentaci\u00f3n y la pr\u00e1ctica de ejercicios f\u00edsicos pueden contribuir a un excelente sue\u00f1o nocturno, reduciendo los casos de insomnio. Un estudio de la Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina realizado en 2022 mostr\u00f3 que al menos 40 minutos de ejercicio aer\u00f3bico 4 veces a la semana ayuda a las personas mayores a conciliar el sue\u00f1o m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido y por m\u00e1s tiempo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En el caso de las mujeres, esta patolog\u00eda no es tan frecuente antes de la menopausia, pero despu\u00e9s, puede presentarse con mayor frecuencia. Con el paso de los a\u00f1os, no tienen esa necesidad de largos periodos de descanso, suelen dormir bien y cuando se despiertan, pueden levantarse a una hora adecuada sin necesidad de quedarse en la cama para prolongar el sue\u00f1o.
